It is entirely possible to lower your cholesterol level by up to 30% by adopting a healthy lifestyle, according to Dr. Pecotte, MD, Shawinigan’s family physician.

“It’s not the cholesterol that matters, and it’s not having a heart attack and a stroke,” he says.

Not surprisingly, Dr. Pequot recommends prioritizing physical activity, avoiding smoking, and following a Mediterranean diet.


“We know the recipe,” he recalls.

It also suggests favoring fiber and nuts in your diet and cutting out processed fats, refined sugars, and sugary drinks.

Experts say that supplements do not help prevent disease.

Dr. Pecotte recalls, however, that statins (hypolipidemics) are a treatment for people who have diabetes, have had a stroke or have heart problems or kidney failure.
