“Many of you may not know this, but I am actually a school shooting survivor,” journalist Joelyn Bokovac told WSMV4.

At the age of 13, the journalist found herself in the hallway of her Alabama school when someone opened fire.

She added that Monday’s events in Nashville brought back many painful memories.

“My heart breaks for these families […] “The adrenaline runs through my veins because I know what these kids are going through, unfortunately, and I know what it’s like to hide from a shooter,” the journalist said in a report.

Diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder several years later, Joelyn Bokovac now hopes to be able to present her point of view as a journalist. She reiterated the importance of patience for parents when it comes time to discuss these events.

“Just tell them you’re here to talk when they’re ready. I think that’s the key, and don’t make them feel guilty for not wanting to talk,” she said, adding that it took her two years to talk about what she went through in 2010.
