French presidential election: Macron will win in the second round against Le Pen

Outgoing French President Emmanuel Macron wins the second round of the presidential election over far-right candidate Marine Le Pen, with a score of between 54% and 51% against 46%-49%, according to opinion polls conducted on Sunday after the first. round.

The result is thus much lower than it was five years ago when Emmanuel Macron won 66.1% of the vote to Ms Le Pen’s 33.9%.

Both qualified for the second round on Sunday, with about 28% of the vote for the incumbent president and about 23% for Marine Le Pen, according to estimates.

The smallest second-round result is 51%-49%, according to a survey by the Ifop-fiducial Institute for TF1/LCI/ParisMatch/SudRadio. Two other surveys give 54%-46%: the Ipsos Sopra-Steria FranceTv/RadioFrance/LeParisien/LCP/RFI poll and the OpinionWay for CNews/Europe1.

In detail, about a third (35%) of voters for right-wing candidate Valerie Pecres (Les Républicains-LR) would refer to Emmanuel Macron and just as much to Marine Le Pen, while the remaining 30% chose to vote for a blank, zero. Or abstain, according to Ifop.

For OpinionWay, 43% of LR voters would support the outgoing president, compared to 27% for the far-right candidate.

And the carryover of votes for radical leftist candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon – who came third in the second round according to the latest estimates – is also very scattered: 33% for Mr Macron, 23% for Ms Le Pen and 44% for white, he drew or abstained, according to Ifop. According to Opinionway, the proportion will be 27% for the outgoing president and 21% for Marine Le Pen.

Three-quarters of voters for the far-right polemic Eric Zemmour say they want to vote for the National Rally candidate, compared to just 4% for the outgoing president, according to Ifop.

The Ifop poll was conducted on Sunday from 8:01 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a sample of 968 people registered on electoral rolls drawn from a sample of 1,004 people representing the French population aged 18 and over. The error rate was 3%.

This view was also carried out on Sunday with a sample of 1,739 people. Ipsos has a sample of 1,172 people.
