European Rugby Championship 2023 – Samuel Marques: “In Portugal, rugby is having a great year”

European Rugby Championship 2023 – Samuel Marquez will miss the final of the European Rugby Championship, dubbed the “6 Nations B Championship”, between Os Lobos and Georgia (Sunday at 8pm, in Badajoz, Spain). He stayed with his club, Carcassonne, in difficulty in Pro D2. In this historic season for Portuguese rugby, in addition to qualifying for the World Cup, the captain believes in the chances of his troops.

A few months after qualifying for the World Cup, Portugal reached the final of the Sixth Nations Championship. Portuguese rugby is doing well…

In Portugal, rugby is having a very good year! It was a rich and wonderful year. The enthusiasm is growing game after game, as we saw in this qualification for the final. Now people know we’re going to the World Cup, so there’s more enthusiasm. But it is difficult to keep rugby alive in Portugal because football is the number one sport. Changing morals is a bit complicated. You are starting to climb in spite of everything, so when we meet again we are very happy. And when you see the stadiums getting more and more full, it’s even more fun.

In what areas has Portuguese rugby progressed in recent years to achieve these results?

There are a lot of talented young Portuguese. I’ve already said it, but the arrival of Patrice Lajesquet four years ago did a lot of good! He was able to enforce discipline and create a game system that would be checked by all players and staff. It is a very popular rugby movement. When we have a choice, we have a lot of fun.

How do you face the strong Georgia team?

We’ll have to fight back. If you don’t do it against them, you will definitely skip it. This will be the first meeting stage that will be important. We must not deny our game and move the ball. I think we can, but it will be a match within a match. Especially since we will meet in the World Cup where we are in the same pond. This will be the first match that will set the pace!

What are the captain’s last words before returning to Carcassonne?

It was simple. We have to play our luck to the fullest! Players have to play hard and cause whatever may happen. It’s already unbelievable to be there, so all you have to do is play freely. In the semi-finals, we beat a great Spanish team (27-10). You have to remain very humble, go back to work and try to get something against Georgia.

How will you live this meeting from afar?

i don’t know yet. I will watch it calmly with my family and I will fully support my friends!
