Collision between two metro trains, one killed and 57 injured

The collision between two metro trains, Saturday, in Mexico City, resulted in the death of one person and the injury of 57 others, according to the latest report issued by the authorities, and it is a new accident that mourns the public transport network in the capital after the accident that occurred in May 2021 that left 26 dead.

“There are 57 injured people, some with minor injuries, but who nevertheless reached hospitals, and unfortunately one death,” said Claudia Sheinbaum, the mayor of Mexico City, in a brief message to the press at the scene.

“The most dangerous person is the train driver,” she added.

The trains collided in a tunnel connecting Potrero and La Raza stations, on metro line 3 that crosses Mexico City from north to south.

Justice opened an investigation into the causes of the accident, and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador expressed his condolences to the victims via Twitter.

Mexico City’s metro regularly comes under fire due to lack of maintenance of facilities. In May 2021, a bridge collapse while a train was passing killed 26 people and injured a hundred.

In the same year, a fire at a metro checkpoint poisoned 30 people. In 2020, two trains actually collided at Tacubaya Station killing one person and injuring 41.

Mexico City’s metro, opened in 1969, has 12 lines and 195 stations for 226 kilometers of tracks. In 2021, it carried 837 million passengers.
