Mr. Prigogine, who is under US and European sanctions, has been accused for several years of interfering in US elections, particularly during the 2016 presidential election.

He is specifically accused of creating “troll farm”, false profiles operating on social networks to try to influence voters, for example by discrediting candidates or transmitting false information.

The once reticent businessman is increasingly asserting himself as a public figure in Russia, compounding the manifestations of support for the Moscow offensive in Ukraine.

At the end of September, Mr. Prigozhin notably acknowledged the creation of the Wagner paramilitary group in 2014 to fight in Ukraine, recognizing its presence in particular in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
