Breast cancer: ‘mothers’ and young adults are also at risk

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in women between the ages of 30 and 49, but few are concerned. Women under 50 do not have access to preventive screening for this type of cancer.

Breast cancer is also the leading cause of cancer death among Quebec women aged 30-49 (17%).

“Over the past few years, we have noticed in the foundation that younger and younger women are being diagnosed with breast cancer. The situation is worrying […]. This is most important because breast cancer is usually more aggressive in young women,” said Karen Isault-Epersel, president and CEO of the Breast Cancer Foundation of Quebec (FCSQ).

Aiming to further inform young people, FCSQ on Monday launched the awareness campaign “It’s not just maternal cancer. Look at your breasts, you’re not too small. The strongly titled campaign reminds us that this disease doesn’t just affect older women.”

When breast cancer is detected at an early stage, the five-year survival rate is 99%. Thus, we aim to educate young women to practice observation at home in order to detect any abnormalities.

“Breast monitoring is essential to a woman’s health. Don’t take it for granted that this happens to others. The younger you are, the more aggressive they are, the more important it is. Two minutes into your week. Emily Gobenville, a young woman who overcame breast cancer at 27,” explained Emily Gopinville, a young woman who overcame breast cancer at age 27. It could save your life.”

According to Statistics Canada, if this trend continues, one in eight women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime and one in 34 will die of this disease.
