Angola: UNITA demands the cancellation of the elections, according to Lusa – World Today

LISBON (Reuters) – Angola’s main opposition party, UNITA, filed an appeal with the Constitutional Court on Thursday to annul last week’s presidential and legislative elections, which were won by the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), Portuguese press reported.

The Angolan People’s Liberation Movement had 51.17% of the vote, according to the final results sent by the Angolan Electoral Commission.

UNITA has repeatedly contested the official election results, citing in particular discrepancies between the total provided by the Electoral Commission and its own calculations.

According to statements by the Vice President of UNITA to Portuguese television channel “RTB”, 187,000 votes were not taken into account in the most populous province of Luanda in Angola.

The commission insists that the elections were fair and transparent and denies any wrongdoing.
