Alexander-Arnold IV, his second… The five favorites to win the Premier League Player of the Season title

Eight players have been shortlisted for the Premier League Player of the Year award. Their names were revealed last week.

A few superstars are missing from the list of nominees for the Premier League Player of the Year award

Some notable players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Virgil van Dijk and Harry Kane failed to make the list despite their strong performances this year.

The nominees are Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarrod Bowen, Joao Cancelo, Kevin De Bruyne, Bukayo Saka, Son Heung-min and James Ward-Prowse. One look at the list is all it takes for Premier League fans to spot the real contenders and those who only stand a chance.

Without further ado, here are the top five Premier League players for the Player of the Season award.

#5 Joao Cancelo (Manchester City)

Joao Cancelo entered the 2021-22 season as one of the best right-backs in the world. He has been widely published as a left-back this season, but that has not limited his impact on Manchester City.

The Portugal international was one of Manchester City’s best performing players this year. He brings a lot of attacking dynamism on the left side to Pep Guardiola’s men. Cancelo is also one of the most technically gifted and tactically intelligent defenders in the world today.

In 35 Premier League games this season, Cancelo scored one goal and provided seven assists.

#4 Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Liverpool - Tottenham Hotspur - English Premier League

Liverpool relied heavily on Trent Alexander-Arnold to dictate play through depth and provide a spark of creativity in attack. The Englishman is one of the best passers-by in the world and his footballing skills are essential to Liverpool’s attacks.

Alexander-Arnold is at an incredible level this season, scoring two goals and providing 12 assists in 31 Premier League games. He has little chance of winning the Premier League Player of the Year award this time around.

#3 Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

Wolverhampton Wanderers - Manchester City - English Premier League

Kevin De Bruyne didn’t play a big role in the first half of the 2021-22 season. However, he has since changed his style with Manchester City and has been a force to be reckoned with. He’s been very good in goal and playing this season.

De Bruyne scored no fewer than four goals in a recent meeting with Wolverhampton (12 May). The Belgium international has scored 15 goals and seven assists in 29 Premier League matches so far this season.

De Bruyne played a crucial role in keeping Manchester City ahead of Liverpool in the closing stages of the current season.

#2 Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur)

Tottenham Hotspur - Arsenal - English Premier League

With Harry Kane failing in the first half of the season, Tottenham Hotspur were in desperate need of someone who could take charge of scoring goals. Fortunately for them, they have the incredibly talented Son Heung-min in their ranks.

Son has been Tottenham’s best player this season and has thrived under Antonio Conte’s management.

And to make things even better for the Lilywhites, Kane made an appearance in the second half of the season and both forwards have done a great job of late. Their exploits have now propelled Tottenham into the Champions League.

In 34 Premier League matches since the start of the season, Son scored 21 goals and provided nine assists.

#1 Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Liverpool vs Chelsea - English Premier League

Mohamed Salah is the favorite to win the award for the best player in the English Premier League this season.

He hasn’t been at his best in recent months, but he’s unstoppable all season.

Salah has been scoring and providing assists like clockwork for Klopp’s side for most of this season.

The Egypt international won the award in his first Premier League campaign (2017-18). He scored 22 goals and provided 14 assists in 34 Premier League matches since the start of the season.

Liverpool still has an outside chance to win the Premier League title. If that happens, then Mo Salah’s contributions this season will be talked about for years to come.
