10 killed in an avalanche in northern Pakistan

An avalanche killed at least 10 people in a remote area of northern Pakistan on Saturday, officials said, noting that difficult access and bad weather were hampering rescue operations.

More than a dozen other people were injured in the avalanche, which occurred near the Shunter Pass, which connects the Gilgit-Baltistan region to Pakistani-administered Kashmir.

“A group of about 35 nomads returning from Kashmir have set up a camp near a valley,” relief official Sabah Khan told AFP.

“They were hit late at night by an avalanche that left at least 10 dead,” he added.

According to preliminary assessments, as many as 15 head of cattle may have perished as well.

The death toll was confirmed in a statement issued by the Gilgit-Baltistan authorities.

Police official Mohamed Riad told AFP that the residents of this area are taking the lead in the rescue operation due to the difficulty of access to this area.

Every year, the local nomads, who belong to the Bakarwal community, migrate along with their herds in search of pastures and escape from the harsh weather conditions.
